Asia Bibi is a Christian farm worker involved in a row with other Muslim farm workers after they refused to drink from a bucket of water she had touched because she was not Muslim. When they demanded she convert to Islam, she refused, prompting a mob to later allege that she had insulted the Prophet Muhammad. Asia Bibi was convicted in 2010 for allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammed and has been in solitary confinement for the past eight years. Recently her death sentance has been overturned which has resulted in thousands of radical Islamists taking to the streets to protest the verdict, blocking roads and burning tyres as they demanded she be executed.
Lawyers defending Christians are sometimes murdered. Salman Taseer, a brave Muslim who was governor of Pakistan’s Punjab province, was murdered for expressing support for Asia Bibi. Pakistan’s federal Minister for Minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti, was also murdered for defending her. Ms Bibi’s lawyer Saiful Malook fled Pakistan to the Netherlands, telling reporters there that the UN and EU made him leave “against his wishes. “He said: “I pressed them that I would not leave the country unless I get Asia out of the prison…I am not happy to be here without her, but everybody said that you are the prime target at the moment and the whole world is taking care of Asia Bibi.”
Asia and her husband are now seeking asylum in another country, including the UK as they remain unsafe to stay in Pakistan.
We ask for your prayers for Asia Bibi and all who are defending and supporting her in Pakistan. We know this battle is not against flesh and blood but the powers and principalities of darkness. We ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to intervene and bring Asia, her family and her lawyers to a place of complete safety and for there to be a peaceful resolution to this situation.
