Our Ethos...

...a personal comment from Pastor Nigel Powell

With so many, hugely successful, large inner city churches springing up and drawing crowds of believers to them, is there still a place for the small, local community church like HGFC?

Having been part of the original eldership that pioneered this “Brandhall Baptist Church Plant” some 30 years ago, I might be forgiven for wondering whether it might be time to call it a day and to send everyone off to join them! I am, after all, the other side of 60 and could quite happily settle back into retirement….and I would…if it were not for this one thing…God’s calling ….on my life …and on the lives of those within our congregation!!

“God places the lonely in families; He sets the prisoners free and gives them joy.”

I am always so pleased to read that God uses the foolish things of this world to confound the wise!!! …and it is hidden there ….in His great wisdom….this gem of truth…. that He has chosen and set apart people, just like us, to serve Him, His Kingdom, and the community of people around us, whom He loves with great passion.

His desire is that we might bring blessing into broken lives, minister peace to troubled hearts and demonstrate His Love to the hurting and lonely…..a City of Refuge for those who need safety and protection.

The world in which we live has gone global!!....but the tragedy is, that many people’s lives have become more and more isolated as they struggle with broken relationships, financial pressures, unemployment, sickness and desperate loneliness.

Jesus said that He had come to “bind up the broken-hearted and to set the captives free!” In Psalm 68 we read that “God places the lonely in families; He sets the prisoners free and gives them joy.” I am a firm believer in family life….it was God’s plan from the beginning and remains to this day, the best place for each one of us to grow in, however young or old we may be. That is why God gave us the name ….Hurst Green “FAMILY” Church…...but it’s not just a name….it is the very foundational character and ethos by which we seek to live and operate….a growing family….a family with arms outstretched to welcome new members into it…whatever their background or circumstances….a family where there is more than enough love to go around so no-one feels left out or isolated.
Why not visit sometime….and see for yourself!
